Students' heartfelt efforts for needy families

The stark reality of Oldham's poverty-stricken families kindled a kind and caring spirit among students at Oasis Academy Leesbrook.

After charity UKeff revealed the struggle faced by many in the borough and the demand for their weekly Food Aid Hub at Oldham Unitarian Chapel they decided to act.

Led by head girl Katie-May Bowles, head boy Szymon Barszcz and deputy head boy Subhan Mahmood they organised a food collection, drawing in dozens of donated items such as tinned and dried food, nappies and toiletries from fellow pupils and staff.

They were assisted by principal Sarah Livesey, her PA Hannah Murphy and Andrew Smyth, Hub Leader for Oasis Hub Oldham, and their amazing efforts are now set to make a difference to the many users of the Food Aid Hub alongside its Monday morning cafe which offers hots meal, food parcels, advice, signposting and clothing to anyone in need.

Aisha Abdulkarim, UKeff Community Co-ordinator, said: "For the families we support, these items are absolutely essential in making sure that there is enough to eat each week.

"The school children learned how there are many children in Oldham who go without meals and were determined to help.

"We are extremely grateful to the staff and students at the school and we will be distributing the food at our weekly Food Aid Hub.

"We receive no government or council funding and rely solely on donations. Without the generosity of our supporters we would not be able to bring comfort to some of the most needy in our community. "
